November is National Diabetes Month. As we enter the holiday season of good times with friends and family, remember to always cherish your health. Food and fellowship do not have to lead to weight gain and its related illnesses during the holidays.

The Center for African American Health is pleased to partner with Walgreens Healthcare Clinic and Pharmacy to provide the FREE Walgreens Health Tests voucher. The voucher entitles the bearer to receive the following Health Test at No Charge: One Blood Glucose Test, One Body Composition Test and One Blood Pressure Test. A limited number of these vouchers, which expire 12/31/2013, are available for pickup at the Center for African American Health – contact Tanaka Shipp at 303-355-3423 ext. 108 or email email@example.com to obtain a voucher.

PRE-DIABETES AND DIABETES?
Why these test? Diabetes and co-morbidities like high blood pressure may be controlled and even prevented with early intervention. There are 79 million Americans at risk for diabetes (known as pre-diabetes). Within 5 years, more than half of these folks will have full blown diabetes. The Center’s diabetes prevention program, Live Well 4 Life, has a proven and nationally recognized record of decreasing the onset of diabetes.

NUMBERS. . .
Here are the blood glucose numbers to watch out for which indicate you are pre-diabetic. If your numbers exceed these ranges you are already diabetic. The pre-diabetes blood sugar ranges:
· Fasting plasma glucose test
(FPG): 100 – 125
· A1C test: 5.7 to 6.4
· Plasma glucose measured
2 hours after a 75 gm
